Also call the building inspection at City hall. In a lot of states, the owner can do most anything to the house he occupies, but a city permit and inspection are required. Besides assuring the job meets all codes, if you have the city inspection sticker on the box and the building permit recorded at city hall..this should take car of your liability to new owners or some insurance/legal questions in case of fire. CITY PERMITS AND CITY BUILDING INSPECTIONS ARE THE CHEAPEST INSURANCE YOU WILL EVER BUY!!
