Indie Vs. Dealer -> cost surprisingly similar

FYI...in obtaining quotes for replacement of an A/C Compressor I discovered that reputable indy shops in the Boston area charge prices that are not significantly less than dealer prices. In fact, I was able to get a better quote on the A/C compressor from the dealer since they are running a 15% special on all major services this month. Without the special the prices differed by only a couple of hundred bucks (which to me justifies the added convenience of their location, assurance the job won't be a hack, etc).
Tell me again why an indy would be a better option?
