I disagree. I've had many dealers through the years recommend preventative maintenance or "since we had to take X apart, might as well replace it and save you the added labor." That's happened with my Acura and my Saab. The phone call is always painful (especially with the Saab) since you're already in the hole, but in the long run its helpful, like you said...as preventative.
There is a fine line though that you might get customers to think you're changing unnessecary parts and trying to screw them. People walk out of dealerships feeling they got screwed no matter what the outcome. Suddenly, if everytime you take your car in for an oil change they come back and say, "Ever think of getting a new Y???"
