I am a firm believer that a good indie is more likely to do a good job than a dealer. There are certainly exceptions--there are bad indies and bad dealers. I find indies (at least mine) understand that just because you drive a Saab doesn't mean you have deep pockets. Dealers, I think, look at it the other way: if you can afford a Saab you can afford to pay too much for service.
An indie....
has fewer customers, so he has to keep them happy.
His whole business is based on doing the work right, 1st time, so you come back.
You can deal one-to-one with the owner, and that relationship helps
You aren't just the next victim.
If he's good he doesn't mind when you bring in your own parts.
He recommends used parts when it's appropriate.
And he will give you advice on DIY, too.
With one exception (a pirate in Marblehead, MA) I've had consistently good experiences with indies and mediocre or bad experiences with dealers, over 30+ years. Kind of car doesn't matter: VW, Saab, Volvo, Ford.
Now tell me why you should go to a dealer.
