I've owned a couple of electrics and recently bought a gas one. In general I like it, but there's a "but"...
The "guard" or whatever you call it, over the string, is much larger on the electric unit - the gas trimmers have very minimal guards.
I don't consider it to be a big safety issue, but it does make one big difference - when using the gas one, I get a lot more debris sent in my general direction. When I used to trim with the electric unit, my shoes and maybe the very bottom of my pants would get dirty. In contrast, after a session with the gas trimmer, I'm covered head to toe in plant-clipping-junk. And on exposed skin, sometimes the clippings hit hard enough to cause small welts.
Doesn't really deter me from using the thing, but I've definitly gotta watch what I wear.
