Depends on what you need, but the $200 to $300 models from each are excellent.
I was just at an HP event for print industry analysts and tested some machines with images directly off my PowerBoook. Very impressive results. I don't recall the model numbers, but something like 7650 comes to mind.
Pick up the May 2004 issue of Consumer Reports. Big tests of many cameras and printers. Excellent articles. Pay particular attention to the one on the diff between branded and generic inks. Very interesting. I went through the HP color science labs and saw what they do to develop all their stuff and it was quite impressive. Epson does the same, so either is a good bet.
Basic units use 4 colors. Ones that use more do a better job. 6 and 8 color machines are best.
I have an Epson C84 which is very good. Will probably get an HP for some other stuff that requires more quality.
