Most inkjet printer printer inks will fade rapidly. A photo just a year old can get remarkably faded - similar to how a 20 YEAR old traditionally print photo would fade. To a trained eye, inkjet prints fade in months. Around town, look for homemade ads printed on paper and placed behind lexan which get sunshine. Or find a document you printed out a couple years ago with an inkjet and see how much weaker the blacks are compared to a new printout of the same document. They fade very quickly.
The upside is that you still have the digital file and can print again, but that's a pain if the photo is framed, or was given to someone else. Sometimes, even people lose data, by not having adequate backups, hard drive failure, lightning damage, viruses, pebkac and disorganization.
Epson's high end printers have ultrachrome ink options which uses pigment instead of dyes for longer life (30-100+ years).
Or you can get them printed via a photolabs printer, which uses traditional light sensitive photopaper and chemicals. In the past 10 or so years, photolabs have been converting to the RA4 process which should produce less fading than the previous generation of paper and chemicals. To do this, take the images on a memory card or CD to a photolab or wal-mart or a place with this equipment.
