When I was in the HP labs earlier this month I saw the testing done using regular ink, the long life ink and regular silver halide photos. They subject the prints to high heat and light to accelerate the aging process.
IIRC, the HP long-life color inks are good for 73 years (105 if black and white)
the regular inks are good for about 8 to 10.
generic non-branded for under 5
compared to silver halide at about 23.
Epson has done similar tests with similar results. It does pay to buy the more expensive inks if you want to keep the photos around.
