right now I think it is not well proven, at least for cars that have to do all things: commute, haul lots of stuff, go on long trips, etc. I don't see a compelling reason to go to something like a Prius over my 9000 and have to do 4 to 8 hour roads trips in a boring car. But the technologly will change before long.
But to answer your question, you bet, if Saab (via GM's deep pockets) had hybrid or electric cars it'd certainly be worth a close look, as long as the driving experience, safety, practicality were all still present. Imagine, for example, a 1.2 to 1.4 liter turbo 4-cylinder with about 140 hp and a regenerative electric motor giving another 100 or so. Wouldn't be all bad.
