The problem with full electric is the technology isn't much better than 100 years ago. The first few hundred cars here in NYC back then were electric, and had good range. They were also liked better because they didn't make the ungodly amount of noise the gassers did (nor the ungodly amount of gas the horses made...)
It's been a daydream of mine, too, to do an electric conversion but an NG is a VERY heavy car to start with. After I read up on it, the best Saab to do would probably be a Sonett, being small, fiberglass and all. Usually, conversions are Rabbits, Golfs with 30-50 mile ranges, or pickups with the bed filled with batteries, for a better range. If you trade off lots of range, electrics will easily outaccelerate gas/deisel engines.
I don't live outside the city yet but I an electric is on my DIY list 'someday', cause I know full well most of my trips are will within the range of the batteries.
But...when I win PowerBall in Friday, I'm definitely going to look into methanol fuel cells. A few companies vend (egregiously expensive) bare units and it might be interesting to see what can be done with that, a 9-5, and four big electric motors.
