You'll get more responses over on the C900 board, but I'll toss in my 2 centimos.
I've used a bunch of different things for control arm spacers: from rear brake pads to 1" pieces of oak to 1-1/4 inch nuts from the local Ace hardware. The nuts give me the best clearance.
The spacer is *very* important because the spring pushes down on the upper control arm but the shock limits the lower control arm travel. If you don't put the spacer on, you'll never get the ball joint back in after you swing the steering knuckle out to move the drive axles out. In fact, you may not be able to get the ball joint *out*.
To bleed the clutch, I use the poor man's clutch pressure bleeding tool (a 2-1/2" inner tube, an old brake fluid reservior cap, and a bike pump).
Here's the URL for a "pressure bleeder" search over on the C900 board. Some of the idears are a bit more sophisticated.

If you can disengage the clutch OK, just remove the slave cylinder like you were going to do a clutch job, but leave it connected to the hydraulics.
I'm planning a similar project for later this summer.
