If you're riding long distances, steel is going to give you more comfort than aluminum over a long distance.
Of course, all the "cool guys" ride aluminum and because of that, most production frames are aluminum. However, Lemond and Specialized do offer steel frames in your price range. And Lemond has a nice, laid-back geometry perfect for longer distances.
Another consideration is used. Once you get fitted and know your size, check out Ebay for used bikes. You can get a better quality frame/bike for the same price as you'd pay for a new, low-end bike.
