I got the bug to pick up a bike again last summer, and I bought a Fuji Ace with my meagre starving college student resources. The Ace is full cromoly, frame, fork, etc. It has rather cheapo Shimano Sora components, but they've done well for me, I've been riding somewhere between 15-25 miles a day, with a 30-40 miler thrown in there once a week or so. Two of my cousins own Fujis, one a Roubaix and one a Newest. The Roubaix is a bit pricey at around $1200 but the Newest checks in sub-$900, comes with an aluminum frame this year and a carbon fork to help reduce vibrations. It only has Shimano Tiagra components, which as far as I can tell is the only thing keeping this bike from being in the $1500 range. Check out fujibikes.com, I found their prices to be somewhat lower than other manufacturers' bikes with similar components.
