I'm from the boston area and I go to college down in PA, Bethlehem to be exact. If you were looking for the best route from PA, i usually take 78 across to 287N up the the Tappan Zee bridge, where you go on 87S (couter-intuative as you are actually going northeast if anything). From there i take the Saw Mill River Parkway right after the bridge. That will end up on 684 N which will take you to 84 E (i think it is East, though it might be north). Take 84 all the way through CT up to the mass pike, I-90, which will take you right into boston. Usually takes me between 5 and 6 hours from school, depending on your driving habits ( as i tend to hang out in the passing lanes a bit too much).
The only tolls you'll hit going that way are on the mass pike going to boston. On the way back you have to pay at the mass pike, tappan zee bridge, and getting back into PA. From the amount that i've done this, it really does save you a lot of time and frustration over going through NYC to take the Tappan Zee. The way that i go, the one i explained here, is quiet and usually hassle-free albeit somewhat boring.
For stuff to do around the city, i have one suggestion. If you like baseball at all, try and catch a sox game, as Fenway really is a very unique and really great place to watch a game. I've yet to be to another park i enjoy nearly as much. And really, this is the year, they're going to win it.
