We bought a 97 Disco new and had almost no problems with it. The only unscheduled maintenance over an 8 year period was a blown intake manifold gasket. During that time, the paint, body, interior and mechanicals held up alot better than most older Saabs we have seen. We replaced it a few months ago with an 04 Disco only becuase it offered three row seating.
The key with Land Rovers is to find one that has been well maintained with regular maintenance. Many Discoveries were leased and had minimal, if any, maintenance done. That can leave a pretty big repair bill taking care of several years deferred maintenance. I would take my time and find one that had been pampered by an ethusiastic owner.
Oh, the unit body Jeeps (Cherokee and Grand Cherokee) are complete garbage. The drivetrain is mediocre, the interior is cheap and of poor quality and the chassis is not reinforced for off-road use and very quickly develops significant flex. Park a unibody Jeep with one wheel up an incline and open all the doors and rear hatch. Chances are you won't be able to close any of the doors due to the tremendous chassis flex. I remember renting a Grand Cherokee with 5,000 miles that had more squeeks and rattles than our Disco did at 50,000 miles. Stay clear of the Jeeps and get a Rover with a stout frame and solid axles.
