Chevron is Chevron, and Texaco is either Shell or Chevron until 7-1-06 when it becomes Chevron.
I have had no bad experiences with Shell and have often bought that brand in the past. I have almost no experience with Chevron and Texaco because they are not sold in Michigan. Texaco may never be exactly equal to Chevron, the Techron additive package found in Chevron may be kept exclusive to that brand even after the 7-1-06 date.
An oil industry exec said on TV recently ---
There are filling stations labeled as Buck's Gas, but no Buck's Gas refineries. The gasoline sold under different brand names is all identical, other than possibly some brand additives. Buck gets his gasoline from a refinery which supplies many other stations and brands.
I don't agree that all gas is equal. I think the small off-brand stations probably get older gasoline or bare-bones base stock. For this reason I will pay a reasonable premium for what I believe is a better/fresher/more uniform product sold under a national or regional brand name. I also avoid Gasohol whenever possible, my Saab doesn't like it.
