Thanks Jim and Roger for the advice. The dealer is charging approx $315. I know they charge $90/hr for labor so if the part goes for around $130 it sounds like they're charging about a 50% premium over what an indie would charge. Too late now, as Julia's already given the van in to them. . . .
As for the warranty issue, we'll pursue it with Honda directly. What's interesting though is that the dealer offered Julia an extended four-year complete coverage warranty for $1700, but wouldn't replace the EGR under the new warranty even if she bought it on the spot. They say it is a "pre-existing condition." I've never heard that term other than in connection with medical insurance, but I'm not surprised. Any way to eke out another buck from the helpless customers I guess.
What do people generally think about these tack on warranties though? $1700 doesn't sound like way too much for four years worth of repairs, but it doesn't sound incredibly undepriced either. (I guess that's the point of it. It has to work for both sides with a slight advantage infavor of Honda.) I have to get a better understanding of what would be covered but I'm curious what people's experiences have been. FYI, the Odyssey is a 2001 with around 30,000 miles.
