So I spoke to a very helpful Honda customer service rep (more on that later) and she looked up the emissions warranty information which apparently varies by state. It turns out that, at least in NY, the EGR valve is covered by the 3yr/36K warranty but not the 80k emissions warranty. However, because I am only about six weeks from the expiration of the original three-year warranty and still within the first 36K miles, the rep offered me a complimentary reimbursement from Honda. I didn't have to haggle much at all. As for the "very helpful Honda customer service rep", I admit, I'm more than a little surprised myself. I called the toll free number, connected to a live person within seconds and she was actually able to answer my questions. Very pleasant experience; very pleasant results. Go figure.
Thanks again to you guys for the advice. I'm not especially car savvy, and have only started thinking about this kind of thing since I bought my Saab. I'm not sure I would have bothered to call Honda without your input.
Vlad, if I remember correctly you are in NY, or was that Vladimir? Or are you one and the same? Anyway, I'd be happy to buy you a beer with some of the $ I get back from Honda.
Thanks again.
