It obviously makes life simpler if a manufacturer makes cars for both right- and left-hand drive markets. Yes, they still need to move the steering wheel and pedals, but at least the instruments are standardized.
That said, I first saw it in the Prius. I think it was for ease of adaptation to US and Japanese (RH) markets. At the time most car magazines thought it was weird. I guess when there wasn't a mass revolt, some manufacturers started doing it just to be different.
I put this idea with other miserable failures such as the 1980's talking cars (your door is ajar...your door is ajar...) and digital speedos. The don't die immediately; it takes a few years to run their course.
