I might have bad-mouthed the idea myself until I actaully drove a car with center-mount instruments.
My friend has a Toyota Echo that I've driven a few times. Not a real winner of a car, but it does have the center mount instruments (what few of them there are - no tach or temp guage). I felt that it took less time to refocus my eyes and that it required less eye movement to look at the center instruments than traditional instruments. Additionally, the instruments cannot be blocked by the steering wheel and a warning light might catch your eye faster.
Now, I'm not saying the center-mount is necessarily superior or that it is the "wave of the future," but I was rather impressed with my encounter.
