My E-type has everything in the center except for tach and speedo. This lets it have a much larger tach and speedo since they don't have to share that space. It's done originally to make it easier to make both RHD and LHD versions on the same car. This car also has a spot in the passenger footwell for the steering column to go through too! Again a provision for easier production of both RHD and LHD versions.
I'm not sold on how the center mounted cluster is done on the mini though, perhaps retro won over function.
