With game at a distance, you may need that. But zoomed in pix often do not seem to capture the moment that the eye sees scanning the whole scene. I think the 12x optical is a good feature for what you are going to be doing. Take lots of digital film. You can delete some pixs, which will help
I find that a small digital camera is quite shake sensitive. A heavy Nikon with a long lense is self stable. A tripod will often be a problem to setup. I have been thinking that a small digital would be stable on a small tripod, not extended and folded up. Hold the tripod in the left hand and manage the camera with the right. That would be much less prone to shake. But strong light will help. Dawn or dusk: the lense when zoomed out will gather less light, so that is where you will have your issues. Turn off flash and red-eye as that will spook the game at any time.
