... as opposed to "perceived need". I know, that's not the way cars (or anything else, for that matter) are marketed. Our '99 9³ (a comparably tiny hatchback with a measly 185 hp) can haul four people & four stuffed suitcases for a 3-day weekend in the mountains or a 2-week trip from Colorado to California & back. If I can, while climbing a 3% grade at 7,000', easily pull away from any 5.0L V10 or 6.0L V6 SUV on the road, why would I need even more power (& less efficiency)?
I know, I know... The desires stirred by effective marketing propaganda are impossible to reason with. (Logic will never overcome emotion, right?) Personally, I would've much preferred a "base model" 9³SS over the US-version 9²X. Y'know, something with a 2.0L NA engine & all manual/mechanical controls (crank windows, no sunroof, etc). At the same price as a 9²X, it might've convinced me to open up my checkbook. I guess I'm just an Old Fart beyond my years...
