Indeed. Same time last year, my dealer made me a grand offer on an unsold 03 Aero sedan to replace our 01 lpt (with Aero ECU). The Aero could have been ours for little more than what we paid for the lpt. Although I always longed for an Aero, we kept the lpt for a few reasons. 1. The rational for buying an expensive (for us) brand new car, was to keep at least 10 years. 2. Every time I buy new tires, I am happy they are not 17". 3. With the Aero ECU and software upgrade, the lpt becomes quite decent, I would think, similar to the 220 hp L4 Arc.
Although I fully agree with those who would like to see Euro type base models, i.e., with less trimmings, I am not sure the rational for the L4 is still there. As of today, a V6 Impala gets better gas mileage than the 2.3 lpt (Interestingly, the Aero, it is actually rated better than the lpt for gas mileage), so why not go with a modern V6 which will attract a lot more potential customers who wouldn't be caught dead in a four banger. Unless of course they are able to come up with a more efficient L4. A few years ago, Saab was working on interesting concepts such as Combustion Control and the Variable Compression Engine. Are they dead or just sleeping ? Personally, I would like to see a powerful and efficient hybrid power train in future Saabs. Out of curiosity, I will test drive the V6 Accord to see what it's like. Seems like an interesting avenue for luxury cruisers.
