A single sub can create wave cancellation problems and will make some bass frequences disappear. The only effective solution is to have two subs in stereo mod and locate each right beside the main speaker to keep things phase aligned.
The argument that you can't tell the direction of low frequencies so you only need one in mono mod has some problems. And if the sales folks told you that you needed to buy two to work best, they would loose sales. Two really do sound better, and with some music with natural accoustics, you can hear/feel stereo content in very low frequencies.
The biggest problems with low frequencies is that they are very distorted in the main speakers and in most subs. Velodyne has a very effective solution with very very low distortion.
