I made a pair of towers with 4.5" midranges and 1" tweetes in MTM dipolar (or bipolar) set up. The top midranges and bottom midragnes each had there own air space and that sat on top of a 2 cuft sealed for a 12" sub. The set up was biamped, with the mids and tweets getting the right and left channel of the receiver and the subs get feed by an old yahama two channel amp (split from the sub output of the receiver, so it was dual mono)
Bass response was awesome, but the set up lacked in the 80-150hz range. I ultimately cut the boxes down and went with a single sub as lugging those 100lb monsters to and from college became too much for me to deal with.
The sound stage was huge and it detail and clarity were very high at all volumes in every part of the room, what it did lack was focus as the imaging was pretty much all over.
I think my next project will be to take a decent tweet and six and make them essentially a book shelf speaker on top of a sealed 10"sub (in tower for) with a built in 250 watt amp each. And then repeat the 6 and tweet for the surround and center.
