For movies, sound will also depend on how good the sound dude on the movie was. I have rented movies that have a serious 'sweet spot' in the couch, where the 5.1 was done very well. Then there are the near bootleg quality 5.1 productions where the sole purpose of 5.1 is to get to hear the center channel (dialog).
The newer movies are better 5.1'd than the old ones, of course, but I am amazed at how little effort some producers put even for new movies.
(Paradigm 5.1 speakers, Denon receiver, Mitsu TV, Sony DVD).
