You can spend a ton on coffee makers but you don't need fancy technology to make decent coffee. The Krupps and Braun (and a couple others) use a cone shaped filter that definitely does a better job than the flat bottomed ones like Mr. Coffee, Black and Decker, etc. We use a gold foil filter instead of the paper ones. The gold ones last for years and do a good job.
We have a Krupps now, after using a Braun for 7 years or so before it died. I bought the Krupps on a half price sale for $30 a couple years ago.
What you need to make good coffee is ......good coffee. Which is fairly subjective, being a matter of taste. We tend to brew it fairly strong and even when we use an inexpensive coffee people remark on how good our coffee tastes.
