You are doing what I would do. Check this out: "someone" rear ended a pick up truck in the ON RAMP because some idiot came to complete stop! And it doesn't even have a merging lane! On ramp actually starts a whole new lane at this entrance, but some (actually many) idiots still hit the brake! WTF?
Also there is a point I want to address. When you let someone else in, you are actually giving up the "right of way" that is not yours! You don't have the right of way. The road does. So before you come to stop and hold up all the cars behind you just to let some one in from the smaller side street, check to see no one else is behind you. You are not being nice, but actually being a a-hole for giving up the road's "right of way". If both roads at the intersection has "right of way" determined by the city/state/couty, they will put the Stop signs on both road.
Otherwise, Stop sign is there on one road for a reason: to keep the traffic flowing as much as possible on the bigger road with more cars.
This makes me mad because I know the road and choose the bigger road with right of way to drive so that I don't have to wait for a break in the traffic to go and some idiots keep letting people in...
This will also apply to changing lanes in highway. People in the lane has the right of way. So if there are lines at the exit ramp and someone wants cut in, do not let them in. People waiting in that exit ramp has the right of way before some idiot who thinks he/she can just cut in right before the exit.
That's what I call a defensive driving. Defend your position in the traffic!
