When I was much, much younger, my dad tried to get me into the game. I went out with a few times and thought that the game was for old men - my dad started at a late age but got "addicted" to it. I preferred tennis in my youth and played the game competitively. When I got into my early 30's and was not able to play tennis competitively due to an injury, I tried going to the driving range and trying it out. I must say that the Tiger wave was a factor. I must confess that I am now an "addict" and have managed to improve my game over the last 5 years of playing "seriously". I too have been humbled by the game too many times! Just a word of advice - taking proper lessons will contribute significantly to improving your technique and add to your enjoyment of the game. A pro gave me two really good pieces of advice - you get out of your game what you put into it and play within your ability. That is - manage your own expectations based on how much you practice and play smart shots.
Have fun!
Simon
