Ford and Volvo have both been quiet on this. I don't remember any car magazine test reports saying if the Volvo is a totally unique design or borrows heavily from Ford. However, with a stable of various sized SUV's in Ford's fleet and none in Volvo's when the X90 was designed, I strongly suspect the Volvo contains significant Ford influence.
True there are some major differences. The Ford uses a longitudinal engine layout and Volvo uses a transverse(?), meaning there may be few common components under the hood. But I am guessing the remainder of the vehicle used Ford's existing knowledge base and influence to speed development of the vehicle, and possibly some parts too.
I wish the 9-7X had more differences with its "cousins" also. I wish Saab had been able to do a complete new exterior, not limited to ahead of front doors only, and been allowed to install the twin-turbocharged version of GM's L6 engine (400+ HP!)which has seen development but no applications.
But if this vehicle generates cash for Saab, and helps them survive until a SUV-type vehicle can be developed with more influence by Saab's Engineers/Designers, then I am glad it exists.
