Find a good indy who works on Saabs and understands them. Pay him to go throught he car with you at his side, and make a list of all the stuff that needs or may need fixing. Then break the list into pieces:
Essential: Core reliability and day-to-day safety and use of the car. You want stuff to work, nothing to leak, etc.
Important: Stuff that you need to keep an eye on and will need to spend money on in the next 6-12 months.
Nice, but optional: The minor stuff that you can live with in a 9-yr-old car.
With the indy, price out this stuff, and note which things can be done at the same time. Like if you need a water pump, it's a good time to do the serp belt and pulleys, too. Some people like to separate routine wear items that may be due, like tires or an exhaust, from stuff that is actually broken.
Then compare those costs to what replacing the car would be (like Ari notes, taxes, interest, downstroke). You don't say how many miles you have on the '96, but you may just be hitting a cash infusion point, like on the '95 I just picked up. No biggie. Do the work and the car will run a long whiile. And you get all the comfort-safety-performance benefits that come with a Saab (as opposed to a Yota, Honda, etc). Like Ari points out, all used cars need repairs. And if you were to go to something like a Toyoyo you'd be surprised at the parts and labor costs.
