I think you can definitely compare the cost of reliability, safety and maintenance, to the depreciation of a new car. And I'll throw in a new car as part of the deal.
Very often folks spend substantial sums to keep 10 year old cars on the road. There is definitely a value to the reliability and safety of a new or newer car. There's definitely a value to knowing your payment is "X" every month, and not zero one month and $2,000 the next.
Sure you can drop the comp and collision on a 10 year old car, but if you can afford to walk away from it, than you could afford a new or newer one as well. I keep the comp and collision on my 10 and 12 year old Saabs. It's still not that expensive and my newer Saab is pretty close to the old ones, not more than 10% more if any for full coverage.
