At an old job we were allowed to park out back in a little alleyway. There were dumpsters and such back there and one of the businesses had to have one of theirs replaced/repaired. When the company doing the repair dropped off a new one it rolled into my car to the tune of about $350.00 (if memory serves). I did not see it happen but noticed the new dumpster so I rolled it over to my car and where there was a mark on its fresh paint, matched the dent on my car.
I took pictures of the damage, with and without the dumpster next to the car, and used a ruler to illustrate proportions. I also scrapped my paint off the dumpster and into a bag.
I then proceeded to call the 1(800) number on the dumpster.....
The company started a claims process and I, feeling good about their actions, got the work done on my car. After giving me the 2 month run around they finally told me that they were not at fault based on their own investigation. After I told them about my pictures, the bag of paint chips and alluded to court action, the check was in the mail!
You however seem to be in a stickier situation....
I would (as suggested) file the police report and get the old resume in order. It appears from the attitude you are getting, that any action you take, will only lead to animosity towards you on the parts of your Boss and his/her friend. Hey, if that is indeed the case doesn't sound like a very good work environment to begin with.
Good luck with whichever route you decide upon.
