After being 5 states away (at college) and playing the field for a while I reliazed that she was the one I wanted to marry. Marriage after I graduated was the natural way to continue the intellectual intimacy. After 5 years though it is far from a dreamy eyed "You'll just know" for me. Marriage has much more to do with committment than with starry eyed love (though that continues - although it gets better when the starry-eyedness fades and you begin to build a life together).
Now that a kid is on the ways its an entirely different feeling - in part raw fear about the mechanics of providing, in part selfish thoughts about having to give up personal freedom, and in part a willingness to go after with a baseball bat anything that threatens my family.
It isn't a decision to take lightly, for context (cautionary and otherwise) you might find "High Fidelity" useful. Talking with someone who grew up with bitterly divorced parents might also be advisable.
Good luck in whatever choice you think is good.
