By sad coincidence, as these posts were being written, my '99 9-5(manufactured in '98)suffered engine failure. Car was purchased in 2001 as an off lease vehicle (from Michigan)in Acton, Ma from a dealer, with 30K miles. The salesman wrote the dates/mileages of the previous oil changes in the car's record book, which I received at the time of purchase. I had the oil changed fairly frequently-all within the manufacturer's 10K miles specs.
Over the past 4 weeks, the dealer kindly lent me a new 9-5 to drive while they and SAAB-USA decided what to do. The decision turned out to be that they would not extend the warranty to my car, but allowed a "good will" gesture of $750.00 off the purchase of another Saab, and that Saab decided "not to participate in the repair" of my Saab. When I asked for their reasoning, I was told that they could not verify the oil changes prior to my ownership, despite my offered proof of the handwritten records-by their salesman. Needless to say, I am not happy with this decision.
When I purchased the car, it had the remaining warranty in force. Between the still-in-force warranty and the salesman's records, I thought I got a well maintained car with low mileage and warranty protection. Surely, if the oil wasn't changed prior to my purchase of this car they knew it, and wouldn't the warranty have been voided already? That is what I would have thought. I was told the required motor replacement would cost me about 7,000 dollars. Anybody have similar or better luck? I'm consulting a lawyer.
