Saab announces extensive customer commitment
Saab Automobile is introducing a worldwide retroactive eight-year warranty program to cover owners of certain 1998 –2003 Saab 9-5 and certain 2000 – 2003 Saab 9-3 model-year cars. The warranty will cover repairs in the unlikely event of a malfunction in the engine lubrication system.
The eight year duration of the warranty relates to problems in a limited
number of engines in older Saab 9-5 and 9-3 models that under a rare
combination of certain weather and driving conditions may be subject to a
build-up of 'oil sludge', where the engine oil has prematurely decomposed.
Customers with cars that were previously affected by this problem will be
fully compensated. Customers who are concerned about their cars are advised to contact their local authorized Saab dealer.
"This is our way of taking responsibility for the inconvenience and cost
that these problems may have caused our customers," said Bengt Nilemo,
Managing Director GM Sweden. "It is a unique measure, but this is about our customers¡¯ confidence. We believe that nothing less would be appropriate for a premium brand such as Saab.
¡°Further, we urge all customers to follow the owner¡¯s manual instructions for changing their oil, and to use synthetic oil. Following these two simple steps will go a long way to ensuring the problem will not occur.¡±
The primary cause of the problems is the way the oil in the engine may
become prematurely decomposed, for example, due to short driving distances
when it does not warm up sufficiently after a cold-start.
* Affected models and engines:
 9-5 with B205 and B235, model year 1998-2003
 9-3 Coupé/CombiCoupé with B205 and B235, model year 2000–2002
 9-3 Convertible, model year 2000-2003, 9-3 Viggen model year 1999
NB: Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan and the ¡±new¡± 9-3 Convertible are not affected, as these models are fitted with a different engine. Saab 900 or 900/9-3 models up to model year
-99 are also not affected.
