You were there first. This is not a mean spirited comment but it is entirely fair. They knew what the surrounding environment was when they purchased their house, or they should have. You would think people buying $500k houses would be relatively intelligent.
I live in a fairly expensive house (half of the price of your neighbors) in a subdivision and one of the first things I did before purchasing it was to survey the surrounding areas and in fact actually pulled old quadrangles to see what was on this land in the past.
I almost purchased another house first but I took a walk and found a huge 765kv substation hiding behind a tree line close by.
As many of you know I'm a pilot. The same exact thing happens frequently and is in fact happening now with my local airport. People build houses off the end of the runway (which in our case has been there since 1951) and then they complain about airplane noise and try to have the airport closed.
The bottom line, though it sounds mean is that if people are stupid enough not to investigate their surroundings then tough luck. And you are absolutely correct in that they should have had the decency to talk to you about it before the authorities were called.
