I live in a subdivision that was developed in the 1960s. At that time it was WAYYYY out in the country. Now it is in the middle of the hottest and fastest growing part of the urban fringe. The surrounding undeveloped land is now being filled with cheap Pulte houses on 4000 square foot lots. (Zoning calls for 6000 sf but there are ways around that!) My lot and many others are 2 acres, but some of the lots in my 1960s subdivision are as small as 1/4 acre or less.
So now come the complaints from the long time residents, who feel that they were somehow entitled to expect that the privately owned undeveloped land around us would never be developed, as if it were a park. My disgruntled neighbors could have protected themselves by buying that land for $1,000/acre many years ago, or for $25,000/acre as recently as two years ago, but they didn't.
One guy who has a bad 1970s rambler on a small lot (less than 1/4 acre) put up a big banner in his front yard advertising his house for sale in a way that demeans the new homes, which back right up to his back yard, which is too small to provide any buffer. (The banner says, "Why buy a box on the rocks when you could buy this...") Of course his house is a POS, it now has as little privacy as the new houses, AND he is asking for more money than the new houses go for.
In my opinion, those of us who live in the existing houses have a duty to accommodate our new neighbors. I don't think we have to comply with all their restrictions -- for example, I don't think we should have to remove existing fneces in good repair, or ask permission from their architectural committee to repaint our houses. But removing nonworking cars from our back yards where they were formerly not visible, but now are visible, does not seem unreasonable.
Ultimately, the people who lived happily here for decades when it was the country, and now find themselves in the city and are unhappy about it, will have to move further out of they cannot adapt. And they will be amply rewarded when they sell their houses at urban prices.
