I know how you feel. We have two in the house, a English bulldog and a shar-pei mix. Our previous dog died in our house five or six winters ago of old age at 14. Brandy was a German sherpard mix. We adopted her at 9. Very smart, very loyal, great to kids and very protective. German shepard is known to be recist. Our Chinese friends and relative who came to visit need only be smelled by her at the door to gain entry permit. Not so with people of any other race who came to visit. We'd have to restrain her.
The last two months of her life she would fall down when relieving herself and got up after a few minutes. The last two week she would relieve herself on our tiled foyer (and fell down). We didn't have the heart to put her to sleep. But I didn't know if her condition persisted what I would have done. She died in Janauary when it was freezing cold with foot deep snow outside. Wife insisted she be buried in our backyard. Can you imagine digging in frozen solid soil with a pick in January? We now have two family dogs buried in our backyard.
