Sycracuse, very sorry for what you're going through. We've been there, too and fully appreciate how your gut is churning these days. Griffy sounds like a terrific partner.
When our first passed away we were left with a considerable void and an ache. He was the best dog in the world. Certain no other dog could measure up we went yrs dog-less. Then 3 yrs ago, we brought home "Reuben", our current partner-in-all-things. Dang if he isn't the best dog in the world, too.
If I may offer a personal suggestion... if you know for sure you don't want to go dog-less, how about bringing a pup into your home real soon? The pup would not "replace" Griffy, that's not the point. But having "new life" in your life can ease the transition immensely. And, if Griffy's one who enjoys pups, it could be uplifting for him as well. As for the decisions you have to make... nothing's more personal, and there is no wrong answer. As for me, I would likely forego the radiation. It will extend Griffy's life a few extra months, but they won't be he favorite months.
My heart's with you. And kudos to you for fully appreciating what wonderful creatures they are!
