sorry Syracuse for your current pain
I put down "the real best dog in the world (sorry Stickman ;)" a little over a year ago. His liver problems came on suddenly, tried a few things, but didn't prolong his (and my) suffering. Even though my wife wanted to stay dogless for a while, I wasted no time researching another dog. Took a few months, now have a 14-month old Australian Shepherd, who's certainly a candidate for the next best dog in the world.
Regarding getting a pup to lift Griffy's spirits, my inclination would be no. Maybe he would love to be around another dog, but I think that if he's not feeling well, probably the last thing he needs is a puppy bothering him. Also this way you can concentrate your attention on him.
good luck with Griffy, good luck with your next dog
when you start dog-shopping, Iams' has a great dog library website
