Hey there...
I got my B.S. in Mechanical at Gonzaga University, then went to work for a civil firm, and am currently mid-way through my M.S. in Civil Engineering at Montana State University. I must say that I like the diversity that I've seen as a result of my change.
If you aren't into a Masters' degree, then I'd give some serious thought to changing. Working for yourself is possible in any field. You would have to gain experience in whatever field you want to be in later, no matter what the degree. There are more private-sector civil firms, and they are located in every geographical region...not as much bias towards urban areas as in Aero/Mech. If you establish a reputation for killer work in the right specialty, you might be able to spin-off and be a consultant (i.e. work for yourself). Some will be able to do that, and others won't.
I agree with Yaofeng that your cross-discipline expriences will only help you...an what's the hurry.
Figure out what you want to do WHEN you work for yourself, and then take the appropriate steps to acheive the goal (A degree in engineering will never be a bad thing to have in your back pocket.)
Gonzaga has an Engineering/MBA program in the cirriculum that allows a five-year plan of B.S. in a single discipline engineering (or a "general" engineering science degree) and then a Masters in Business Administration... Not a bad thing if you think about running your own company! A lot of schools are offering this type of program...something to consider.
Good luck, and enjoy school!
