hang with me, I'm just thinking into the keyboard.
If I wanted to go into performance car parts/acc's, I'd stick with the Aero/Mechanical, try to attend some place with some specific automotive eng. courses (like UMich) and get your foot in the door of an automotive company...from Ford to Saleen, to anybody working with cars. Learn all that you can, and tinker! Then look to work for a small company making custom after-market parts. (I grew up in the same town as minimania...a very small outfit, but they do all their own parts design to tweak out the new Minis and the old ones...kinda cool).
THis way you'll learn about what it takes to market and develop a product, and learn what the niches are out there. One you find a niche, design something right, and build from there.
(My brother worked at the indy euro-car repair shop that would fit all of minimania's new parts on their own personal cars before putting them on the market. A friend of mine also worked for Dinan (Aftermarket BMW stuff) for a while. Cool gig!
Again, good luck.
