$375/month in gas = 125 gallons at $3/gallon = 1500 miles/month at 12 mpg = 18000 miles per year. Isn't the average in the USA like 12-15K miles a year?
But let's go back to $2.25/gallon for a minute. This guy would have been paying 125 gallons at $2.25/gallon = $281.25 a month. So, he was still paying a lot before. If an extra $25 a week makes the difference between making or breaking it financially, then that guy shouldn't have bought the truck in the first place.
Also, remember that if you go from an SUV getting 16/22 mpg (say, mid-size SUV), to a Saab wagon (21/30 mpg), you may still not be getting the gasoline price deal that you were thinking, insofar as your mid-range SUV probably goes with regular fuel, and you're supposed to be premium in the Saab, which is 25 cents more a gallon (for now).
I don't know, I think Bob Lutz and crew and GM are right -- except for the lower-end really large Suburban-type SUV's, I just don't see rising gas prices making a dent in SUV's unless gas hits $4/gallon -- and definitely not affecting "expensive" SUV sales (those over $40K).
Let's put it this way. I'm probably considered rich by any normal sense, and I'm trading in my 2001 9-5 Aero sedan five-speed for a 2005 9-7X Arc (i.e., V8), assuming I like the 9-7X. The gas prices don't phase me. I had been getting 23 mpg in the 9-5, and expect to get 15-16 in the 9-7X. I drive 8,000 miles a year (self-employment has its advantages).
Frankly, if someone can afford a vehicle that MSRP's for $40K+, a $100 increase in the cost of gas each month shouldn't be hurting them. If it is, then maybe they should be a used Honda Civic.
