You are comparing two different methods of accomplishing the same goal: wireless internet access.
1. Via cellular system - on CDMA systems (i.e. Verizon and Sprint), you will need a separate data card (extra $) that plugs into a laptop. Probably similar on GSM systems (Cingular, T-Mobile). The appealing feature of this option is that data availability should be practically everywhere there is cellular coverage. The bad news is price.
2. Via "hotspot" or 802.11 systems - You need a different 802.11x card. This is commonly available at airports, Starbucks, McD's, etc., but only in limited areas, not wide area coverage. In some cases (your ofice, Starbucks) it's free since someone has set up a network without security on it. In other cases (i.e. airports) it's a subscription service, but much less expensive than cellular.
Where your friend does his trading "work" and hangs out will determine what type of service he requires. Option 1 is great for mobile workers and corporate types who travel a lot, you can read/respond to your email in a taxi. I would say that an extra $80/month for option one is stretching things for somone who can't cover their own basic cellular service, but what do I know? Let's see, there's probably a two year contract at $80/month, ....
