That was fantastic! I thought about living vicariously through you, but I equate that to drinking non-alcoholic beer... Sure, it's good, but something would be missing!

My little scammer (James Godfrey, a.k.a. jgautomotive,yahoo.com) posed as a broker for a customer abroad. A week has gone by since I received the cashier's check. Seven days and several inquisitive emails later from "James", I finally responded tonight with the following:

Hi James:

Actually, you and I are two very lucky people. My bank contacted me about two hours ago, and I was trying to decide how to tell you this...

It looks like the cashier's check is no good. Apparently, your customer was trying to swindle us!

My bank's fraud department has already contacted the U.S. Secret Service to pursue your customer through the proper international authorities. You will probably be contacted as well - I assume so they can get additional information about your customer.

I asked if they needed additional contact information for you, but they just use embedded information in your email headers . (Don't you just love the Secret Service? These people have the technology to do just about anything!) They assured me they would be able to contact you directly, so they told me I should just re-list the car for sale and not worry about it. You will probably be contacted next week some time.

Sorry we couldn't finish this deal. Sounds like it would have worked out well for both of us.

Take care, and God bless.

Rich

Who knows whether he'll believe any of that. It's just fun thinking he might lose a little sleep worrying about it.

Anyway, thanks again for a great read and a constructive way to inflict a little poetic justice on these “busturds”.

Rich
