You hear right, dalmations can be hyper, and may not always good with little kids. But it's also how you raise them. Do research, try to find a breeder and ask questions...lots of them. Go to dog shows and talk to owners. And you may see some other breeds you like, too. I think the American Kennel Club site, has show listings. (Might be AKC.org...IIRC.) Google dalmations for lots of info, too. They are great dogs, can be high energy, too.
Whatever you decide to get, DO NOT, for any reason, get a dog from a pet store. They have over-bred, inferior dogs from puppy mills. Only buy from a breeder. The cost difference is minimal and you get a much better pooch.
