Early mid 80's I sprang for a pair of Boston Acoustic A-400's; they easily broke the $ 1,000.00 mark. To this day they still sound great and audiophile friends are amazed at their lasting tonal quality.
I took a three step approach to finding the best speaker for my $$$'s: develop a critical ear for real live performance (and preferably unamplified) music. That will give you a baseline to hear for. Next, go listen to what audiophiles tell you are "state of the art". Then see what you can afford that comes closest to both the real thing and state of the art playback. You'll be pleased with the results of your efforts.
As far as vintage is concerned, McIntosh can't be beat for aesthetics; that said, from the late 70's thru mid 80's Yamaha, Philips, Denon, Onkyo, JVC, NAD, and several others made superior "consumer" equipment. I have a JVC intergrated amp, Denon tuner, tape, and turntable. All perform flawlessly today and the A400's still deliver "concert hall" performance.
Good luck, keep us updated on your quest.
