Old Marantz gear is cool, and nice quality (to my ears anyway :)).
You may wish to also check out vintage Harmon Kardon amps as well as well as some older NAD amps. At your price point a receiver may be a better bang for the buck, even if you don't care about AM/FM. You'll just have to look around, but it will be fun.
As far as speakers go, some suggestions to look out for: older Acoustic Research, Polk, JBL, Klipsch, etc... These will be more of a personal preference as each may sound a little different. You just need to find out what you like. You may also consider getting higher quality (very accurate) bookshelf sized speakers to run with a sub in a corner. Good deals are around, but you need to be patient.
No surround in my house ;)
I have vintage Thorens TD125 for vinyl and JVC mid range DVD for CD's powered by an older silver face solid state Harmon Kardon receiver pushing a pair of 3-way 12" JBL studio monitors. I run an external stereo EQ to 'clean up' live recordings when necessary.
I am really pleased with this set up, but I still give my dad a hard time for selling all of his old McIntosh gear! HTH.
Best regards,
Don
